Reflections: The Universe

Advent

She scurried around the apartment, fluffing up and arranging pillows and seeing that all was in order for her Soiree. Every Thursday she invited friends and colleagues from the University over to share food and thoughts at her place. She thought that on Thursdays almost nobody had anything to do, so why not have them come to her place. And a good number usually did, bringing odds and ends of food or a bottle of wine. And she provided the rest and a nice environment and wonderful music.

There were already about ten individuals visiting-a South American translator who was getting her MA in French, several of her fellow students in the English Department, the Chair of the Education Department who lived upstairs in the apartment building, a psychologist from next door, and a variety of other individuals, including a Ph.D. candidate in political science from Columbia, his wife and small son.

The son she hadn't noticed much for he was very pleasant and quiet. To keep him occupied while the grownups talked, she gave him a pad of blank paper and a set of colored pencils. From time to time, as they discussed the US Politics, the politics of the campus, and a variety of other intellectual topics, she would notice the little boy whose name she recalled was Jaime, writing or coloring in a corner on a pillow.

When it got to be about 10:00, with a number of bottles of wine consumed, plates emptied people started to say "Good night." The last to leave was the Columbian political science candidate, his wife and his son. As they were going through the door, the boy Jaime handed her the pad of paper which from the top page she found was full of designs and messages. On the top page written several times was the message, "I love you, Karan."

The most curious thing which struck her at first was the correct spelling of her name, which was the family name of her Grandfather. Instead of spelling it the American way, it was spelled correctly the Serbian way. This struck her as she looked at the first page with an effusion of designs and the pointed phrase, "I love you, Karan."

She put the paper pad and the pencils aside and prepared for bed.

However, in the morning, she took a close look at the pad. She had always been very religious, raised Catholic and had considered becoming a Sister in her early days. She had also been very intuitive, prescient. For example, she had already had her first premonition of 9-11 the year before in
