Going Nuclear is about the only clear alternative to substituting burning fossil fuel in the bid to tackle global warming and its treat to the long term survival-ability of the humankind, especially when we are not prepared to cut back on our lifestyles for the sake of our future generations.
Lest we forget, for thousands of years we have been burning fuel for our energy needs, beginning with the caveman who discovered fire can make his food more palatable and keep him warm in winter.
We would have faced the limits of unsustainable development had we run out of wood to fuel our development had we not discover coal and we were about to ran out of coal, we found oil and when we are not facing dwindling supplies of oil amidst robust demands for oil, we turned our eyes on bio-fuels and other energy alternatives.
Clearly, to expect bio-fuels and other alternatives to fully and satisfactorily replace our current and future robust demand for energy to support our unsustainable high standards of living hooked on oil is not realistic. It is just too little and too late.
Even if we are prepared to forgo all else, cars and rely on public transport etc, one basic source of energy is almost indispensible: electricity that runs our lighting, heating, cooling, tele-communication, transport etc.
Therefore, even if we are prepared to cut down our standard of living for the sake of the environment, there is no way we could give up on electricity; reduction by way of energy efficiency, maybe.
It therefore supports the argument that the only answer in replacing fossil fuel to generate the electricity we need is to go nuclear, just as France's electricity is more that 80% nuclear driven.
However, if we take a closer look at the underlying objectives of addressing global warning, is not the survival of the human race at the core of the concern?
If so, turning to nuclear as the answer is only a stop-gap solution. We may solve the global warming concern, but we may create another new set of challenges that get us back to square one, only this time, global extinction by nuclear poisoning overwhelmed by nuclear waste or exploded into extinction by multiple nuclear explosions in diverse places.
My short answer is nuclear power is the answer to global warming, but it creates a new set of similar treats to the long term survival-ability of the human race.
The sad fact is as Man builds, Man destroys and as we build faster, taller and wider, we create a deeper and wider hole to bury us all in.
