I feel that preschool will not improve academic achievement of students in the long run. The only thing preschool has done and will do is to relieve the burden of kindergarten teachers.
Everything students are learning in preschool is what used to be taught in kindergarten, and kindergartners are learning part of the first grade while continuing with their preschool activities. Instead of adding two new years to school for children we should have come up with a solution for the teachers to teach them what they should have learned in each grade to start with.
Many of the teachers I have talked with in the last few years feel that they are underpaid and overworked and really lack the motivation to teach our children the way they should. Is this their fault? Not completely. In a large part it is societies fault. We have taken discipline and leadership out of the school system and placed it with parents only. Yes, parents should teach their children respect and discipline. On the same hand you cannot have twenty-thirty children in a classroom and have someone leading them that lacks the authority to discipline and teach.
Learning, discipline, and respect all go hand in hand. One without the other is absurd. There is to much left wing activism influencing what should be a cut and dry situation. So because of this we are, rather than teaching and holding parents accountable, just adding more time to classroom instruction to compensate for the lack of discipline and even motivation. There are certain things that have to be and their can be no gray area.
Bring God back into our country and put Him back in the schools. I do not care, as do others, if you want your child to pray, it still leads to respect and discipline if your child has to be quiet and respect someone else.
Bring back the paddle's. The first spanking I ever received that wasn't from parent's was from a police officer. I lied to him when I was eleven years old and arrested for shoplifting. I gave him a fake name, and address. When I was forced to tell the truth the officer took a paddle out of his desk and paddled me. My parents did not raise immortal hell. They respected the fact that I was disciplined. When I got home my father drove the point that the officer was making home. I have never stolen or lied to someone in charge again. It is called discipline and respect.
Discipline and respect are what is needed in the education system. Not the extra 1-2 years of schooling that the government has so decided. Put the children in day care. This is where they need to be to learn to socially interact with other children. When most children go to preschool they have not been around children outside the family. I feel that in the long run this "extra schooling" may harm the children in the very ways it is designed to help them.
