The walking stick. Not just any stick. But your stick. A help in time of need. A veritable friend when no one else is around. It's you, or rather an extension. So who are you? What is important to you? That is the first question and perhaps the last question, that means anything, to ask yourself when making a walking stick.
Are you rich and like to make a display? Are you a wanderer that needs a sturdy life long friend to help with the ups and downs of life?
If you can answer this question, then take a walk in the forest whether it is the shopping mall or the real deal. Push away the bushes and look at the ground or in the tree or in the lumberyard isle. Do you want pine, sandalwood or perhaps gopher wood?
The questions seem to be increasing and so do the decisions. Stop the stress.
Solution: You know who you are. You know what you like. You may not have even thought of "how to make a walking stick", but try taking a hunting or hiking trip and wander through the woods of Tennessee or the barren hills of Montana. There you will find what you are looking for; a piece of wood that has stood the test of time. It has seen snow storms and drought. It's been accosted by ants and bitten by bark beetles. It's bare in some areas and has bark in others. It's you. It's your extension. Pick it up. Use it. Keep it. It's a beacon of hope. And when you end the day and set it aside you will know it will be there tomorrow. Time will have etched the grooves and marked and smoothed the surface.
