Play title: Endure
This is dedicated to all who have survived the battle with Breast Cancer.
(black)
The play takes place at a typical Paris sidewalk caf. It is clearly fall as there are colorful leaves all over everything. There are five small tables on the stage. Four of them are empty except the center one where a 40 year-old woman, Amy, sits sipping her coffee. She is facing the audience and dressed in a warm sweater and jeans with a knitted cap over her short hair. There are two other mugs at her table and a large bag on the ground at her side. A 45 year-old man, Paul, carrying a backpack, walks by. He is nearly off-stage when he turns and walks up to Amy.
Paul
Excuse me. Do you speak English?
Amy
Yes.
Paul
Oh good.
Paul pulls a map out of his backpack.
Paul
Do you know where, Avenue, Gustave, Eiffel is?
Amy
You're trying to find the Eiffel Tower?
Paul
Yeah, I've been lost for about three hours now.
Amy points upward towards stage right.
Amy
Look that way.
Paul turns that way, looks up and laughs.
Paul
Oh jeez there it is. I guess I should open my eyes. Thank you so much.
Amy
No problem.
Paul is about to leave but turns back to Amy.
Paul
Would you mind some company? I'm so hungry and really need a coffee.
Amy
Sure. Okay.
Paul pulls up a chair and sits down on her left, facing the audience.
Paul
I've been all over and this is one of the most beautiful cities.
Amy
Yeah. It is. You just get here?
Paul
Yeah. Just off the train from Lyon. You?
Amy
Been here three days now.
Paul
Have you been checking out the sights?
Amy
No. Not much.
No?
Amy
I don't have much energy to, but I will see some when I feel up to it.
Paul
Oh.
Paul sees someone off stage right.
Paul
(shouting to the waiter)
Garson! Un caf et une tranche de pain grill veuillez!
Waiter
(off-stage right)
Oui monsieur!
Paul
I hope I don't get a grilled bass or something.
Amy laughs.
Amy
During my last visit, a friend ordered a book instead of liver.
They both laugh. After they stop Paul notices the other two cups.
Paul
Oh, you're not alone?
Amy looks at the cups then away.
Paul
Oh they don't clean off the tables much?
She turns back to him.
Amy
They are for my two girlfriends.
Paul
Okay I'm I little
Amy
I've been planning this trip for years with two girlfriends. Then, two years ago my friend Mary was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
