Web 2.0 and the Company
Web 2.0 is about using existing technologies developed in the late 90s in a completely new way of thinking. The centerpieces of this new view is the concept of the Internet as a Platform (from the technical point of view) and the concept of Social Network (from the end-used standpoint). A typical application of this new paradigm is no more a classical local application that is downloaded and installed on a client machine, but rather a web application that can be accessed primarily form a simple browser and by other means using the so-called Web-Services. Web 2.0 is not a technological revolution on its own, but rather a new way to integrate exiting technology in new platform.
Nevertheless, Web 2.0 needed two key technological revolution in order to reach its maximum potential. The first one is the raw bandwidth: in the most part of the Nations, a full access to the Internet was available just recently after the introduction of cheap flat ADSL line. Before of that, the connection was limited to a costly low-bandwidth PSTN line. The second key technology was AJAX: its parts were available years ago, but its full potential has been exploited just very recently changing for good the fruition of any website or web application.
The most widely success of the Web 2.0 is the blogshpere, the sum of all the blogs around the world. Originally blog were just a place where people exposed their ideas and experiences, they then became a place to share ideas with others accepting comments and criticisms from friends and common visitors. In some instances, blogs are actually replacing the forum as main encounter place in the internet.
Recently a new breed of blog has evolved: blog that are collection of photos or audio video product crating true multimedia spaces shared among millions of users. The enormous success of two of the major hosts in this fields YouTube and Flickr is widely know to the ICT professional as well as to the users.
Another important category of Web 2.0 application are the ones collectively known as Wikis, they are a kind of Content Management System devoted to maximize contribution from various users group, or from the whole Internet. They work by tracing any modification allowing anyone to add, remove or discuss about contents. Again, the widely known application of this concept the most famous Wikipedia is one of the most visited website on the Planet and one of the most cited in real world.
