Are we safer now than we were immediately after 9/11, or have we just been lucky?

When the shock of 9/11 hit us as a country we went immediately into war time security levels. We had a homeland security report every other hour. Our top political leaders, i.e. our president and his cabinet, were scouring every report they could get their hands on. We were all aware of more security measures in our daily lives and this was fine with almost all of us.

Now that the smoke has cleared, buildings and monuments have been built, and life seems to still be going on, we are more lax. We feel that this extra security is more of a hassle than a life saving precaution. And what about our leaders? As far as I am concerned, they seem to be more interested in the next golf game than "homeland security". We have heard bits and pieces regarding terrorists threatening cities such as Los Angeles. Yet, during a recent bomb detection test, LAX airport failed miserably. And I still complain that I have to take my shoes off when at the check point to get to my gate.

I believe that most terrorist organizations out there base their actions on religious ideals. Due to the religious ties, the plans they discuss are taken very seriously. These people believe their souls depend on them completing whatever bloody task the group has assigned them. They would rather die than fail at their mission. These "missions" to them are God given and they must obey. How seriously do we as a nation take our security when it impedes on our daily lives, such as being asked to take off our shoes at the airports because some weirdo tried to put a bomb in his sneaker?

We as a nation are not safer since 9/11, we have just been lucky. We reacted strongly right after it happened, but we have slacked off considerably since then. Now we are fighting a war in Iraq that most don't agree with. Our military personnel is down to a skeleton crew as many are over seas. America needs to back to homeland security and make our country safe again, before the luck runs out.
