An MC or emcee is much more than just a talking head. MC stands for Master of Ceremonies and the MC is responsible for making sure the proceedings or event keep moving along in a smooth manner.
An MC's duties include the introducing of other participants in the event and filling in the gaps when necessary. The job of an MC cannot be properly conducted by just any old person; it requires someone who besides having a strong voice that can carry throughout the room handle any number of situations at one time. For example; if a performer is running behind the MC will have to fill the time with some form of communication whether it be comical or otherwise. If something should break down again the MC will have to fill the time in. If there are mistakes or problems the MC must be able to jump in and cover the situation and improvise at a moment's notice.
While they were never referred to as MCs men like Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, and Dick Clark were perfect examples of how an MC should be. The performers who host the plethora of award shows on television are not examples of an MC since they also do more than just fill in space, they perform routines as well.
When things run smoothly the MC is barely noticed, but if anything goes wrong he is the first one to get the blame too.
