One word describes why I hate horror movies. PREDICTABLE. That's it plain and simple, they are entirely too predictable. A horror movie should invoke fear, terror, mystery, and the longing for what's around the next corner.
Almost every horror movie I have seen within the last year has left me wanting more. Not more in the sense that it was so good that I wish it were longer, but more in the sense that I really wanted to be scared. Instead, I find that when the killer comes in the house after the victim, rather than grabbing their phone and running outside to safety where they can call 911 or run to a neighbors house, they run upstairs and try to hide. Are you kidding me? That's the most expected reaction to someone coming after you. I'm going to run and hide. Then what happens next? The victim dies! Of course, not like they stood a chance by hiding in a bedroom with no way out and no weapon other than a butcher knife they grabbed from the kitchen. Wouldn't have mattered if they had the knife or not, they certainly wouldn't have had the guts to use it and if they do it always backfires. The killer always ends up stabbing them with their own weapon.
Movies like the "Saw" series are sitting on the edge of really terrifying the viewer. Catching them up the plot and leading them in deeper and deeper until they really can't figure out who the killer is out of the group that has been sent on this "test". Yet it is still very predictable. My husband, bless his heart, sits next to me biting his nails in anticipation while I am calm and not confused or mystified at all by the sequence of events. I want to watch that one horror movie that absolutely scares me out of my wits. I want to feel the need to leave lights on and check door knobs. I want to, for once, be terrified of something that is totally make believe out of Hollywood.
Hopefully, Hollywood will get the idea that the horror movies need to take it up a few notches to really intrigue viewers who can see past the blood, the gore, and the false pretense that these movies display. When you find a horror movie that will truly scare me, let me know.
