Time Management Activities for Children of All Ages
Time management skills are not that difficult to teach children. You can actually have a lot of fun while doing it. If you remove the urgency, and build the foundation, proper time management skills can become a way of life for your child. Success in short and long term activities will thrive, because all things were considered when time mattered.
Time management, like most things, is learned through experience. You have to appreciate the importance of time, so that you can understand the effects of it. If time has no value or consequence, it is considered a non issue. This is why it is good to use tangible things, when teaching your child about time management.
There are many games you can play to help younger children develop time management skills. Some of these are Memory and Musical Chairs. You can have relay races and food eating contests as well. These are fun activities which give consequences for not being fast enough.
Musical instruments are a good investment. They don't directly teach your child time management, but they do help your child learn the concept of timing. Appropriate timing is an essential tool for time management.
Teaching time management to older children can be a little bit trickier. They already have learned that procrastination might not be such a big deal. You need to make the consequences a bit more drastic for them, so that they will feel the effect of not managing time correctly.
Plan an activity, of little or no consequence for you, with a time limit. Tell your child that you are taking him to the store for five items. Talk to him about what he is getting, and where it is located at the store. Help him develop a plan to get the items quickly. Remind your child that it will take time to pay for the items as well. Make sure that your child clearly understands he will not be allowed to spend more than fifteen minutes to pick these things up.
If your child finishes picking up the things on the list with time to spare, use the extra time. You can turn the car radio on to his favorite station. Then you can take the long way home while he sings to his heart's content. Or you can go do something that requires more time, like going out for ice cream. Giving your child time, for using time wisely, is a great way to reinforce the benefits of proper time management.
