As a matter of fact, I believe people vacation primarily to get away from it all. That is, to get away from everyday life. What is more exciting, or more relaxing than leaving your own environment and spending some time away from home? You don't have to go far, just the fact that you get away from your daily schedule and routine is enough to warrant being called a "vacation". The idea is to break the monotony and the routine of everyday life and do something different. Even if you just go camping with the kids a half hour away from your home. You can even stay home and do daily trips to the museum, the amusement park or visit other local attractions. Simply have family over for Christmas dinner. As long as you're breaking out of your regular, daily routine then it's a vacation!

Although some people look for excitement during their time off, I think most people look for relaxation. Our daily life is stressful and hectic. Most people are juggling work with kids, and trying to maintain some sort of a social life all at the same time. When we get a chance to get away from this, in whatever shape or form, we tend to want to relax and recharge our batteries.

The most relaxing form of vacation you can imagine is probably the all inclusive package. You pay one time for your ticket, your hotel and your meals and then it's all taken care of. All you have to do is pack your bags, head South and sit your ass in a chair at the beach with a nice cool drink and a good book. And when you get hot, you get up and go for a swim in the warm water of the Caribbean sea. Now personally this is my ideal vacation, the ultimate relaxation. No laundry, no cooking...no planning activities unless you feel like it...you don't even have to worry about choosing a restaurant and paying for your meals. Everything is already taken care of. Of course, the downside is that since you're always eating at the same place, breakfast lunch and dinner, you don't have much choice or variety in the food, but that's the price to pay for relaxation I guess! If you're looking for excitement, this is not the kind of vacation for you.

Either way, whether we're looking for excitement or relaxation on our vacation, I think one thing is for sure: everyone is looking to have some fun and to just get away from the routine of everyday life. We all just have different definitions of "fun" and different means of getting there.
