We have to ask ourselves: how would a teen use a digital camera any differently from yourselves? What special requirements does a teenager require from the camera that we do not or visa versa?
Teenagers are more likely to use the camera to take pics of themselves and friends in portrait style pictures. Bar the exceptional, they have little interest in artist value or scenery masterpieces. Zoom lenses and manual settings are not needed for a day out with friends.
Things that are important features for a teens camera are the following:
- Size: It has to small enough for a pocket.
- Picture Quality: It has to have enough pixels to be able to print out reasonably to at least A4. At least 6megapixels.
- Dark shots: It has to have a good ISO rating (at least ISO 800) for night-time and low lighting shots.
- Focus and settings: It has to have as many auto features as possible.
- Fashion: It must be a brand name and have good looks.
- Price: From a parents point of view it needs to be reasonably priced as it will more than likely have to be replaced a few times a year.
Below are three camera's that satisfy these requirements according to my personal judgement:
- Canon Powershot SD40
Sleek and stylish with a durable stainless steel that comes in a variety of colours. It is packed full of features and simple to use. It is priced around 250GBP.
- Sony Cyber-shot DSC T10
This camera looks more like a fancy blush case with its Carl Zeiss design and appealing curves. Everything you need and under 300GBP.
- Fuji Finepix F20
This is a more traditional looking camera offering better value for money but keeping its small size and amazing picture quality. From under 200GBP.
