The search for the "perfect" staff definitely plays a major role in the success of a business. However, the complexity of the selection process is often over-complicated. A few simple reminders can make a world of a difference in the overall scheme of staff recruitment.
1. Remember what you are hiring for. This point seems painfully obvious, but managers often make the hiring process much more complex than necessary. If you are hiring a staff of servers for a new restaurant, keep it in mind when conducting interviews. Do not place too much emphasis on unnecessary personality traits or experience. You definitely want to hire strong, positive servers, but you do not necessarily need to find managerial qualities in your new hires.
2. During the process, pay attention to the team you are assembling. If you have hired a few employees already, take their traits, experience, strengths, and weaknesses into consideration. If you are hiring a staff for different shifts, and you have 4 day shift employees already hired, you might want to stress the importance of your next few hires to be swing shift employees. If your initial hires are strong and understanding, your job is easier for the last few, but if you already have some difficult personalities on board, you will need to consider that for your next few hires. You definitely want your entire staff to "gel" and be able to work together as a team.
3. Remember your important qualities that you admire. If dependability, punctuality, and friendly are traits that you value, hire employees that you feel will live up to your expectations and standards. You don't always have to hire people exactly like you and probably would not want to, but you do need to hire people that you feel will perform to your expectations.
While there are definitely many factors to consider when recruiting, remember that the whole process is not nearly as difficult as it may seem. Mind what you are hiring for, the team you are building and what traits are important to you and your team will reflect your greatness and hopefully work together as a cohesive unit.
