You might not believe it but the path to a great career in sports marketing might start in Oregon.

Oregon, the long-forgotten state, crammed between California and Washington is full of opportunities for someone interested in sports marketing.

In the Portland area, sports apparel giants Nike and Adidas jockey for position as number one. Adidas is continuing to branch out in the area while Nike has it's world headquarters in Beaverton. On any given day, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan or any other sports legend might be seen on the Nike campus. The corporation takes good care of it's employees as well as investing in the communities around it. Nike recently paid for the resurfacing of a number of Portland inner-city basketball courts.

Nike also has also made it's mark at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Three hours south of Portland, this city is known as the "Track Capital of the World". Steve Prefontaine, a running legend, also made his home here.

It was also in Eugene that Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight met. Bowerman was a coach at the University of Oregon and Knight was an alumni. Bowerman created the first waffle soled running shoes (legend states that he used his wife's waffle iron) and Knight helped sell them. Together, the men created Nike. Their love for the U of O continues, with the University receiving many endowments from the corporation.

Conveniently, the Univeristy of Oregon offers a degree in sports marketing that is known nation-wide for it's excellence. The proximity to Nike and Adidas makes internships easy and many graduates have gone on to work for these top ranking companies.

If you are seriously considering a career in sports marketing, consider taking a look at the University of Oregon. You won't regret it.
