When it is said, art is subjective, it just means it may not suit your tastes. Mona Lisa? A woman that may have been stunning in her day, has outgrown her pleasantness with me. Someone's Mother sitting in a chair means very little. I have a Mother, and she sits all the time. Is it art? Life is art.
Art is supposed to awaken the senses. Bring an emotion from the viewer. A man sees a beautiful woman pass by. A sexual emotion arises. He then goes home to watch his two-year-old experience snow for the first time. An emotion of joy for the child learning life swells within him. Later as he watches a game on the television, it's the emotion of envy from never having the ability to leap and catch a football, as he watches players around the man turn the receiver upside down after the reception. A skillful act compared to the leap of a ballerina after she pirouettes across the stage. Art in motion.
As with art galleries around the world, protests rage at times over the content of some showings. Even when it's an emotion of anger, the artist has done their job well. Then you have those who believe photo tours of wartime are in bad taste. Art is also about history. The importance of some paintings in galleries, is the time period in which they were produced. Without the art of photojournalism, would we ever know just how ugly a war can be? What the affect of storms can do to the victims left homeless? It's all a history. Art in galleries, in magazines, and on the streets. The flowing dress in the wind on a woman clutching her scarf around her neck. The muscular physique of a carpenter as he lifts a wall in place for an office building. Art in motion.
To debate what is art, you have to debate the tastes of those who's daily lives must keep them emotionally celibate. All of life, is art in motion. In print, moments in life.
