in which I reference the Fryeburg Fair, and describe the parking and lodging arrangements that I offer within a two minute walk of the fairgrounds. I make sure that my advertisement includes a simple and honest description of the lodgings and services provided in order to exceed expectations rather than disappoint them. As a result of my simple advertising campaign, occupancy is never an issue but the most trying part of the process is getting my guests to leave at an appropriate time on their day of departure.
The nature of a local event like the Fryeburg Fair is such that a guest who rents one of my rooms is likely to stay only for one night, sometimes two. During the first year that I rented rooms to tourists, I had a difficult time getting them to pack up and leave the premises by 11 AM because they would frequently wander back to the fair and lose track of time. I remedied this quite easily, however, by refining my check-in procedure to include a detailed contract with a check-out time and late check-out fees clearly listed and agreed to.
The Fryeburg Fair may never again hold the magic that it did for me as a child. But today, as I enjoy a steady income each year during Fair Week, the promise of honking horns and boisterous crowds of tourists always brings a smile to my face.
