I love all animals. Unfortunately, not all animals feel the same toward humans. Yet, when it comes to dogs, there's not a question in my mind that they need us as much as we do them. Any dog lover or dog owner will tell you that their pet knows them - and they as dog owners love them most of all because of it.
It takes quite a bit to keep the affection of a human mate, but very little to satisfy and be loved by a dog. They require the bare necessities like food and water, as even humans do, but their most undying trait - what we love them most of all for, is the fact that they don't judge us. They love us unconditionally and because of that, we quite often refer to them as our best friend.
How is it, you may ask, that we can compare a dog to a human? That we can love and trust an animal sometimes far more then even family? The answer is quite simple. They come through. They don't weigh the options, decide if a different friend might be more enjoyable to hang out with, and they don't care how we smell, what we look like or if we're unpopular. They love us because they know we love them. Yes, they are animals, not humans, but they have feelings just the same.
The wonderful thing about a dog is you know they'll always be there for you. When you don't get the job you've prayed for, when the person you've trusted has betrayed you, when you're sick, sad or angry - it doesn't matter. All a dog requires to love you back is the love you have for them. They're appreciative, and they return the favor without ever being asked.
Dogs are for people who enjoy an active relationship with an animal. Cats are wonderful pets also, but I've never received the same kind of love or companionship from a cat as I have each and every dog that has lived with me. There isn't one memory in my life that was important where I didn't have a dog at home to tell about. They always listen, even if they have nothing to say.
They sense our sorrows and pain, and they feel it too. Their antics can make us laugh, their behavior can sometimes annoy us, but we never waver from the love we feel inside for them. Once it begins - it's there forever.
Losing them, can be unbearable.
In 42 years, I have never gone more then a week without a dog in my home. My first was given to me at seven years of age. They stay, part of my family, until God calls them home, and I solemnly seek for another to fill the void - the love lost from an irreplaceable friend whose gone away.
