Attempting to define art is like asking what is beauty. An impossible question around which revolves much debate but very little resolution.
Art is in every element of our lives. While some of it may be beautiful such as a painting or a sculpture, art is also about functional design. Art can include paintings, sculpture, furniture making, drawings, installations, comic strips, street art (graffiti art), high heels, costumes, film and landscaping.
However, be warned what I may considered art may be someone else's trash. For example, street art. Graffiti done well is slowly becoming to be respected as a legitimate form of artwork but only to some. Remember this was also the same with different styles of paintings. The work of Andy Warhol was considered different and not necessarily art because he explored the processes of making art with only some emphasis on what was created. Abstract painting was not seen as art initially because it so deviated from the normal concept of art.
Too many individuals try to create this grandiose illusion around art and this makes it seem inaccessible to every day people. Art is everywhere and your opinion about what you consider art is just as valid as any. Like beauty, art is in the eye of the beholder.
