One of the most common misconceptions about yoga is that it's simply a series of isometric exercises. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yoga is the union or "yoking" of mind to body. Focusing the mind and moving with the breath are crucial to yoga. There are many other important aspects to yoga, such as pranayama (breathwork), yamas (restraints), niyamas (observances), and dyana (meditation). Asana, or posture, is only a small part of the overall system.
Yoga may help to regulate levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine within the brain. Thus it has been suggested as a therapy for neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, addiction and anxiety. Also, intense pranayama can trigger the release of endorphins, creating a natural high.
Neurotransmitter imbalances have now been linked with headaches. No empirical Western studies have yet proven that yoga cures headaches, yet it has been proven that the activities basic to yoga, such as relaxation, meditation, and watching the breath, can alter the body's response to stress. This can help to relieve headaches, and is also useful as a part of a therapy program for heart disease, chronic pain, PMS, insomnia, infertility, cancer and depression.
Studies have shown that chronic or severe stress can damage the brain. Neurons in the hippocampus can begin to atrophy, causing loss of memory. It can also prevent the formation of new hippocampal neurons. So yoga, by fighting stress, can help people to foster the healthy functioning of their brain.
Yoga also has significant cardiovascular benefits, and helps the practitioner to gain greater flexibility. It can alleviate anxiety and insomnia.
