While it would be nice to believe that ordinary Muslims rejecting extremists would help bring about the end of terrorism. The reality is that it won't happen. Part of the reason is the simple fact that a number of the Muslim countries are ruled by extremists governments. For example look at Syria, Iran, Libya, and Algeria to name just a few. These countries, among others, have as one of their stated goals, the destruction of Israel and Western Civilization, particularly the United States. This in spite of the fact that the Koran mentions that the Jews and Christians are all believers in the "Book" as are the Muslims.
This was one of the basics that Muhammad laid down when he wrote the Koran centuries ago. But, almost as soon as Muhammad died, this believe was discarded. For a short period of time Jews benefited from living in a Muslim Society. But that soon changed when it became apparent that the best way to unite the different sects of Muslims was to proclaim a "Holy War" against all infidels, including Jews and Christians. This feeling was further fueled by the Invasion of the Middle East by Christian Armies wanting to reconquer the Holy Land during the Crusades. And eventually led to Muslim domination of Spain and other portions of Europe during the 13th and 14th centuries before they were driven out of Europe.
In many Muslim countries today, it is illegal to profess any faith other than the Muslim faith. Those found guilty of being Christians or Jews, in particular, are subject to loss of their property, lengthy prison sentences, and even death. This is completely in contradiction to most Western countries where freedom of religion is allowed if not guaranteed.
Part of this problem can be traced back to the British Empire's rule of Arab nations in the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries. Under the "Balfour Declaration", Britain promised a homeland to both Jews and Palestinians in what is now Israel and the West Bank. And Britain's perfidy when they were pulling out of Palestine following the UN mandate that established the nation of Israel. While professing to be neutral, Britain in fact played both sides, particularly the Arab side. Denying weapons to Jews while freely providing weapons and munitions and training to Arab Armies. All while they were supposedly arresting and detaining terrorists on both sides. For example the "Arab Legion" had a number of British Officers serving with it during the Israeli War of Independence. Yet, other British officers were quietly providing assistance to the Jews.
Even if moderate Muslims were able to bring Muslim extremists in line and control them terrorism would not end. There would still exist other terrorists organizations in the World who would be planning strikes. Not all known terrorist organizations were founded specific religious beliefs. Nor do all terrorist organizations support religious beliefs of any type.
