As a member of the intelligence community myself, I can say with confidence we are absolutely safer now, due in large part to tremendous strides made in inter-agency communications in the law enforcement community. "Safer", yes we are. "Safe", we're not there as yet.
Before 9/11, law enforcement agencies were, to a large extent, disconnected in a many ways. There was lots of "turf" stuff going on, and agencies did not like to share intel or cases, frankly. That's all over now. You see inter-agency task forces routinely now, and that is what makes all the difference. That allows sharing of resources, including the highly specialized technical skills of those found in certain agencies and not in others.
Contrary to popular opinion, the record SHOWS the Clinton administration needs to honestly and realistically account for 96 MONTHS of destroying our intelligence network on the ground here and in other countries and demoralizing of our military personnel. I know many excellent people who left the military during that time who said if the American people had any clue what had happened to our military intelligence during his tenure, they'd be shocked and appalled, and not at all surprised that 9/11 happened. Our borders were wide open, and lots of folks with very dangerous agendas entered our borders and just disappeared...and those who should have been watching simply weren't, or were told not to.
I would also strongly urge you to NEVER believe what you hear about security matters from anyone, unless you know for certain they have a high level security access and are speaking from a fully informed perspective. Our country abounds with armchair quarterbacks, and nothing infuriates me more than some senator running for President or movie stars who think they know it all. They are speaking emotionally and from a dangerously uninformed point of view. All they know is what they read or hear about in the media just like you do. People not only listen, they believe them. They have no actual intelligence information, so they make it up as they go along to scare people into voting for them or into agreeing with them.
While we are safer, and while it's the responsibility of law enforcement to keep us safe, we too, must do our part. Sadly, the average American has NO comprehension of just how MENTALLY unstable terrorists are, and what horrors they actually ARE capable of. They do not like America, they have total disregard for human life, and they
