As an individual who's educational background was rigorous and lacked nurturing foundations, I believe nurturing students is extremely vital. My mother, by nature, is very creative. She showed me the power of self-education and free-thinking. While I do believe a challenging curriculum allows a person to push themselves, it is in seeking that we find the most knowledge. Looking back at my education, it is the papers I wrote and books I read with a broader selection of which to choose which had the greatest impact on me as a writer and a student. I believe it is important to research things that interest you, because often they can lead to other directions that haven't necessarily been chosen for you. Than, you get to experience an education that is truly inspiring and unique. Feeling nurtured, inspired, and respected gives the student the confidence to say their first thought, write, or say something that they normally wouldn't say do to sounding stupid or not having a point. But when you are nurtured and given that freedom, that confidence, you say the wrong and right things, you open up, you find yourself in a discussion, asking questions, and doors are opened to new thoughts. Often in a rigorous curriculum, there is a lot of regurgitation and the student has little time to think about how they actually feel about such topics. It is nurturing a student, pushing them in a healthy and encouraging way that leads to a successful individual, because they understand not only where something comes from, but why.
