"Research is to see what everybody else has seen and to think what nobody else has thought" Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Market research in plain words means discovering the demand for a product or service before actual supply. Market research converts the expectations of the customers into actual facts and figures which in turn helps deciding whether it is worth taking the risk.
Not all kind of research is useful. In fact data collected is like this huge sea of unfiltered information. You got to pick up the right information.
A few tips on what to acknowledge and what to ignore may help.
Know what you want
Ask the right question to get the correct answer. If the question itself is vague, what you will collect will be a confused, ambiguous opinions of customers. Be precise in your quest for data.
Source
Where to ask is also an important consideration. While conducting market research, first of all it is necessary to classify customers and look for opinions from the segment which is most significant. Making a list of sources beforehand will be a quicker way to get information. Target for the particular industry or service your products falls into, that information will indeed be the most important, because that will be your market.
Filtering
Of the total information gathered, keep aside a small margin for exaggerated views. Not one single method of market research has to be relied on completely. What the customers eventually want has to be judged based on the total results and discounting facts that are proving contradictory.
Avenues
Exploit the modern ways of communication to the fullest. Books, television, internet, conferences and anything that has the potential to give you information about the market you are trying to explore, should be covered. Broader and Stronger the research, lesser the uncertainty. There is a circle surrounding a product or a service and to know completely about what a customer expects out of a product, the whole chain must be investigated. Use technology to aid you in knowing more.
Analysis and conclusion
All the information gathered is worthless if you don't know how to use it to your advantage. Invest enough time and effort in analyzing the results. Read between the hidden lines. Decipher the available ocean of information to predict what can be your future.
Market research is a powerful tool. And while what goes on in a customer's mind is not so easy to predict, market research gets you an inch closer.
