Judging the ignorance of US citizens in world issues

whole mess, they will continue sitting there while children starve every day, in the world's richest country.
"I can't eat no food, and I pee in a bucket". Haunting, is the tale of an older citizen, a 60 year old woman living in a run-down and mold infested apartment, right next to the New Orleans sewers. I know I haven't experienced that kind of trauma in my life as yet. But, what I ask of you all is that whilst all these people are crying and are so miserable. Just what is the root of their misery? They lost their houses, they lost their physical history, they lost countless memorabilia of value, and most importantly their homes. Many even lost their family members, and were not even informed of their whereabouts until they searched for days through anonymous bodies at the city's morgue. But most, still have each other. Even as children are crying and adults swearing, people are closer to each other than they ever have been before. They share the same rooms, teenagers have no locks on their doors, and granted there is no privacy thoughts, ideas and secret fears of people are now left out in the open for their family members and the public to scrutinize. What I ask you all to think about is that aside from the obvious tragedy that Katrina is, there is a bigger tragedy underneath everything. People are more depressed about losing their houses than cherishing that now, they are given the opportunity to live right in nature, just as the cave men. Children have to play outside, and although it is devastating play field with all the salmonella toxicity in neighbouring flooded parks, they play outside! No more video games, its now back to books and football.

We all want to get as much as we can out of our lives. Live to the fullest in every possible way. But, what if we just did nothing? Completely forgot about all of our obligations, our memos, all the to-do lists and nagging voices telling us to do something. What if we all just dropped everything and sat down with each other someday? Stop worrying about the chaos of what would happen without control! Lets Look each other straight in the eye, say, " I love you" to strangers, and talk to the trees. Katrina, a devastating disaster surely. But maybe, a reason to see beyond the materialistic things of our generation which can be destroyed, and into that which cannot.
