Record collecting: Who is keeping vinyl alive and why?

Vinyl a thing of the past maybe? But to me, I still prefer the vinyl.

I will never throw my old vinyl collection away. Firstly it's part of my youth and secondly the fact that I love of music, it would just seem sacrilege to even consider doing so.

Although we have digitally mastered Cd's and I know that the quality is wonderful, there is nothing like vinyl.

I am definitely keeping vinyl alive in my home and even managed to find what looks like a second hand record player, I so miss my Ferguson stereo gram that my parents gave me. It was a piece of furniture on its own, but housed my parent's record collection along with the 78's that they had. Sadly most of these got destroyed when my parents split up, but I still have most of the singles.

Also the wonderful colored vinyl's that you used to be able to get, bright pink, yellow, wonderful back in the 70's & 80's. Lovingly known as 12inch singles. Oh so wonderful.

The 45 inch singles were brilliant as you could stack them neatly into a box built for singles. They too could come in different colors, but it was usually just the 12inch singles that were colored vinyl.

I used to work in Woolworth's on a Saturday morning and I had the ideal job as a teenager working on the record counter. My friends who got to work on the counter used to play all our favorite songs and it was a bit of joke if one of them used to jump.

Not quite the same with a CD although they do tend to stick and make a strange noise when they do.

The double album collections were the best, I remember my first album "Songs in the Key of Life" by Stevie Wonder, and I felt so very grown up. My first ever single was "Ben" my Michael Jackson and of course Babylon by Bus by Bob Marley

I still have both of these albums along with my all time favorite Diana Ross and the Supremes collection.

I know you can still get vinyl and I think in some clubs they still do the scratching thing on the turntables.

Being a keen visitor to my local charity shop, I have been known to buy the odd vinyl from time to time, especially if it is a classic.

CD's look good but for me the vinyl collection is something that I can show off to my friends when they come round and we compare notes about them.

I suppose again, its part of my growing up and although things have progressed so much so in the music world, its nice to have a bit of culture to hand on to like everything else in this life.
