Now one thing I want to concede here, I do not believe I made a truly concerted effort to change my eating habits while on Meridia. By the same token, I was under the impression that if I only ate less I'd lose weight. By taking the Meridia, it helps reduce hunger so I should eat less. Good reasoning? Perhaps, but I did not experience a lessening in cravings or hunger as I was told I would. The 6lbs I lost was the same 6lbs I had be gaining and losing for the last 10 years. Now if you're saying, "hey, 6lbs is pretty good", then you really don't have a good perspective on obesity. I am 5'7" and at my highest weight I was 275lbs. Six pounds just didn't cut it.
Last but certainly not least, Phentermine, the benign component of the old Fen-Phen Plan.
Phentermine is a generic drug, which makes it cheaper than Meridia. It is purported to decrease appetite. It's only officially approved for short-term therapy but some doctors will approve it for longer term if effective.
This one is a bit of a sore-spot for me. I went on Fen-Phen when it came out like many of you. I did not see any results more than my average 6lbs. What's more I believe my health may have been compromised. When the news came out about Fen-Phen, I had already quit the regimen. While I'm sure the health risks have been addressed and of all the drugs listed here Phentermine is the one with the longest track record, based on my experience, I'd say absolutely not. I did not experience a decrease in appetite as suggested; what's more when I ended the regimen I actually put on more weight.
The end result here is that ladies & gentleman, there is no pill that will make you slim. You've heard it before, so did I, you want it to be easy and the honest-to-god truth is it's hard. There's no way around it, it's hard work to lose the weight. What's worse is only you can do it. No one else, not your doctor, not your mom, just YOU! The good news is you CAN do it. I did, it's possible.
Look, the one thing no one really thinks about when they're looking for help with weight loss drugs is "What happens when you go off the drug?" I know I never thought about it. None of these drugs are supposed to be lifetime therapy. What happens when you go off the "diet plan"? You're defeated before you even start with these drugs.
All the drugs, with the exception of Alli, on the market today supposedly target your appetite. They never reduced my appetite, unless you consider the nausea I felt on most of them as a reduction in
