Writing on a budget: Time saving writing tips

by Ceaser

I cannot guarantee that my advice will work for everyone, i will simply give you small tips that help me write, in the hope that they will help you as well.

For me i tend to write fiction, fantasy, horror, science fiction. as such my tips will revolve around writing short stories and longer stories of those genres, the tips should be useful in any type of writing though.

I work at a job that sometimes keeps me occupied for 12-12 hours a day, with that much time at work, i am not left with too much time to write, yet i still manage to squeak some time in here and there.

One way is to always carry a notepad with you, or even a small notebook, these can be picked up at many places for only a couple of bucks. You want something small and easy to keep with you at all times, no big clunky school notebooks. Of course you will also need a pen, make it a good one. you don't want it dying on you, nor do you want it to smear all over the paper.

If you have a desk job then you can keep the notepad handy, maybe in a drawer. a better place is a pocket.

If you have a job like mine where you might get dirty or wet while you work, then a good quality ziplock bag can protect the notebook from most dangers.

Now that you have it, use it. if any idea for a story or an article pops into your brain write it down. even if it doesn't work with your current idea for the story, if you write it down then it is there at least, and sometimes an idea that seems bad at first ends up being the best one.

You can also use the notebook to keep track of plot ideas, or small changes that you thought of after you wrote the first draft.

Sometimes my entire story will be crammed into a tiny little notebook and when i type it onto the computer the typed out version becomes my second draft.

Always rewrite, don't cut that corner, many things can come out in a rewrite, plot inconsistencies, or even some parts of the story that just don't make sense. the notebook can help you keep track of these as well as any other changes.

Some people will plan out the entire story beforehand. i find that this does not work for me. whenever i do try to plan a story out what i end up writing usually veers so far away from the plan that the two could be completely different stories.

So now i just jot down ideas, they might be used or might not, they also might not even be important, or they might get used in a different story.

The important thing is to continue writing and to not lose ideas just because you are at work. It only takes a few seconds to jot down an idea. if your notebook is not available use anything, back of a sales receipt, cigarette pack, heck even the back of your hand.

Then When you get home write it down properly. Still take your hour each day to sit and write, but now you will have a whole day's worth of ideas to look through instead of trying to come up with ideas when you get home or trying to remember that good idea you had at work.

It saves time and should help you with your writing.

Best of luck.
