now, and the number of people in debt has been rising as well, which is no surprise when you consider it. We all know someone who struggles for money, and that constant worry is enough alone to drive many people into deep depression, or even to commit suicide in some cases. Money alone isn't the cause in these cases, but what money brings with it, debt and the feeling of helplessness and of being trapped that come from being in debt, are invariably linked with depression.
Many people measure the success of their own lives these days by how much money they have and how much they are earning, rather then how they have grown as a person or things that they have actually achieved themselves. This being the case those who can't earn as much as others are more likely to be depressed because they perceive their low earning as a sign of a flaw within their own personality, rather than whatever the real reason might be, again showing that money is often linked to depression.
On the other hand, the very poorest people in the world tend to be fairly happy on the whole, despite the fact that they often don't even have enough to eat. Rather than being upset about things that they cannot afford and feeling angry, these people tend to make the most of what they do have and focus on the positive things. It is because of this kind of attitude that depression rates are higher in richer countries than poorer ones.
