Usually people ask, "What is the effect of the mass media on...fill in the blank..." It is interesting to think about a movement actually having an effect on the mass media instead. But the radical feminism movement did.
I think that the mass media is now more careful how they portray women in their articles, stories, etc. It used to be that you could use the word 'him' to mean 'him or her'. Now, you can't get away with using 'him' in a casual conversation without being corrected by someone. If you use the word 'her' to mean 'him or her' no man will correct it and live to tell about it. It seems as if the radical feminism has the mass media hijacked to a point. What seems to have started with radical feminism has turned into politically correct can of worms, that has spilled over into almost every other minority category. We can't even call illegal aliens, illegal, anymore. It has become almost ridiculous. Those who are trying to follow the politically correct path find themselves not being able to express themselves fully, because they are afraid to offend someone. The fact is, you will never be able to please everyone - someone will always be offended no matter what stand you take. But the mass media isn't pandering to everyone - they only pander to their loyal customers. The current subscribers to the mass media outlets tend to be liberals (which includes radical feminism) or at least lean more towards that direction. The fact is, if a news outlet does not subscribe to political correctness, including the radical feminist movement, the mainstream media will denounce that outlet as not being mainstream.
So what effect has the radical feminism movement had on the mass media? It has had a huge impact. The mass media has basically joined their plight and pushed the envelope as far forward as society will allow.
