be able to determine a person's mental state and if they do not feel confident in their ability to properly treat the condition presented they will make the proper referral.
Most doctors, therapists, counselors and other qualified professionals who have a viable business will usually have a website or at the very least can be researched through any variety of medically based websites on the Internet. Local hospitals will have lists and usually the on staff Social Worker will have information concerning those professionals available. Crisis centers will also have a number of resources and can give appropriate referrals as well. Your family doctor can also give you referrals but if that person has been patching you up for years and made no suggestions then you might want to pass on their recommendation.
Regardless of who you chose to see, make sure you see someone. Don't jump into the denial hole and pretend it never happened. If you can't afford to see a therapist; then join a support group. If you don't want to air your laundry in public then seek out the clergy. If you have no faith to lean on then check out some of the websites on line that provide support through that venue. Therapy is all about talking, getting out all the uglies and finding your true self; leave behind that twisted person that emerged during the abusive relationship. Find the therapeutic cocoon and cook for awhile and then emerge; new, fresh, and ready to take on a whole new world.
