Short stories: Dragons

Once a powerful race of creatures, there now dwell only a few of these magnificent beasts. Long, long ago they once walked at the side of man, using their magic, to protect humans kind enough to befriend them.

However the humans grew greedy and began to look for ways to take the creatures powers. The creatures sensing the danger they were in, used their magic to go into hiding. This was no easy feat, these magical beasts were not small by any standard. The smallest of them was easily the size of an elephant.

What creature could possibly fit this description you ask? Dragons. These giant scaled lizards, once roamed the earth free and unhunted, until the humans learned of the magical powers that they possessed. now they exist in a magically hidden grove, unable to leave for fear of being slain.

The majestic creatures lived in peace together, but under a constant fear. What you ask, would these mighty creatures fear? I shall tell you. they fear discovery. How can that be possible if they live in a magically hidden grove? I shall tell you that as well, in fact it is the perfect place to begin our tale.

Dragons are talented creatures and they posses vast amounts of knowledge. Like the humans that they once lived beside, they too kept books. Among one of them was a book of prophesies that the dragons believed would come to pass. One particular prophecy was the reason that they lives in fear of discovery.

It was said that these magical beasts would one day be found by a female, human child. This human would forever change their world. However the prophecy never told of when this child would come or if the change would be bad or good, that was why the dragons feared it so much.

"Cally, don't bug me right now, I am trying to get some work done." Said Jade as she tried to sweep around her little sister. Jade's mother and father worked in the fields from dawn until dusk. It was Jade's duty, at age 14, to see to the running of the house hold.

This included doing all the chores both inside and outside of the house, it also included taking care of her 6 year old sister. Cally was a good child most of the time but she too, like any other child, had her annoying moments. This happened to be one of those moments.

She knew that Jade had been late getting to her chores and she was jealous that Jade had refused to tell her what she had been doing. Whenever Jade had errands to do outside of the house, she sent her sister over to play with the neighbors children.
This suited Cally just fine,
