Best ways to choose a major

Choices, choices. When it comes to making certain choices, some have more of an impact on our futures than others. For example, choosing which bus we will take to school tomorrow doesn't affect much, just as long as we get to our classes on time. However, choosing a major can be a much different story.

There are several approaches one can take to help in deciding which major to choose. One way would be to try and get guidance. The guidance could be from your family, friends, or any other people that know you on a personal level, and would give advice on what they think you would enjoy studying the best. Better yet, try and get some guidance from your guidance councillor, or academic advisor. This individual will be able to give you some insight on what the courses you would have to take are like. They can also see your academic record and base their suggestion on how well you have done on past, similar courses as to the ones you will be expected to take to receive your major. Another way, and possibly the best way, to receive guidance would be to talk to various professionals that are currently working, as to what major they received, how they enjoy their career, and any insight as to their perseption of the major they received and its importance to their career. There is no shame in asking for guidance from those in this world around us.

Another way would be to do your research. Start by reading up on the overview of different majors available, what courses you would be required to take, and a description of those courses. Once you have done this, you could possibly start scratching off certain majors, based on past experiences with similar courses or work experiences. Once you've done that, should there be more than one or two majors to choose from, think about where you would really like to end up after the completion of the program you are in; this could have a lot to do with the major you choose. Remember that no matter which major your choose, the company you end up working for will have to train you anyways, in order to make sure you meet their requirements.

The best way to choose a major is to do a combination of the two different ways previously mentionned. Therefore, you can be absolutely certain that you are making the best decision possible, and not wasting your valued time and money. The decision you make in the end should be yours and yours alone, since you will be the only one that has to live with the courses you end up having to take based in the major you choose. In the end, if researched, and chosen properly, you will be happy with whatever decision you decide.
