Why eat organic foods

The American government has green lighted the food and agriculture industry's slow poisoning of the American public. Upon learning the truth about the food industry and what types of chemicals and hormones are utilized for the sake of profit (grows faster, spoils slower) I became extremely irate, and in my usual fashion decided right then and there that my son would be on an organic diet from that day forward. I gave away all of my food and household cleaning solutions the same day and replaced them with organic products.

As a mother, I could not with a clear conscious feed my son food that has been proven to be detrimental to his health.

Check out a few hard cold facts:
1. Children fed conventional diets have been found to have over 6 times the levels of contaminants than those that ate strictly organic food;
2. Pesticides found in conventional foods can cause neurological and reproductive damage in high doses
3. Children's developing systems cause them to be more susceptible to toxins than adults

Need I say more? And that is just the tip of the ice burg. Food additives that contribute to ADD; hormones that without a doubt have affected the maturing process of children; antibiotics that cause resistant strains of bacteria that are harder to cure; you name it the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture has allowed it into our food sources and our homes.
Not only is organic food good for you (higher nutrient levels than conventional foods) it is good to you. The new taste of foods that haven't been chemically altered is amazing. Milk, eggs, fruit, and meat- you name it- I understood now how little children feel when introduced to new foods- yummy! It was like beginning to eat all over again.

The organic regime is costly to say the least. Of course, as usual, if it is good for you, then the price isn't so good to you. I only have one child and our conservative bi-weekly grocery bill is around $225. Yet the cost is offset by a much healthier youngster. The payoff is also reflected in significantly lowered medical costs for the entire family. Less trips to the doctor, less money spent on prescriptions, time off work, adds up to a pretty penny. This makes perfect sense, fewer foreign bodies in your diet results in a much stronger immune system.

I preach the benefit of organic food to everyone that still is eating conventional food and that will take the time to listen to my ranting. Slowly but surely people are waking up and making the choice to switch to a completely organic diet regimen. A lifestyle change, yes- but the positive effect on your children, as well as the environment is more than worth it.

Bon Apptit!
