Short stories: Soul mates

"Christmas kisses are the best." she said and snuggled into Big Ed's furry jacket . He looked down into Sammies ' face and tears formed in his eyes. Snow flurries nipped at their cheeks but Ed didn't feel anything but the warmth of his soon to be fiancee against his chest. It was Christmas Eve , and he wanted it to last forever. Sammie was leaving for the far East and it would be months before he would see her again.

Old Tom, dressed like Santa Claus, glanced back at the young lovers and smiled . He really enjoyed his work . After 25 years of driving the sleigh ,he still loved the sound of the jiggling bells and the clop clop of his horses' hooves on the hard packed snow. But as he rounded the last curve and prepared to turn back ,a snow owl flew straight up into the face of his newly trained pony and spooked him.

The young horse snorted and reared up on its hind legs, pawing at the falling snow. Old Tom yelled and fought to get the animal under control but it was terrified.
The horse took off running wildly down the country lane . In back, Sammie screamed and held on to Ed as the sleigh carreened off the path and into the woods .

Old Tom flew off the seat and slammed into a tree trunk as the horse tried to leap a wide ravine. In one suspended moment Ed and Sammie looked into each other's eyes as they plummeted to the forest floor . Then all was quiet except for the snorting of the horse as the snow fell gently on the broken sleigh.

The whinnying of the animal as it galloped away roused Ed from his stupor .He wiped blood out of his eyes and cried out for Sammie.
She moaned and opened her eyes .

"Ed, what happened ?" she whispered.
"Something spooked the horse ." he said as he tried to free them from the frame of the sleigh..

They were trapped from the waist down and he could not budge the twisted mass.
He fell back bleeding and exhausted .
"You're hurt !" Sammie cried .
"It's not bad ." he said weakly.

" I think Old Tom is in bad shape though, we have to get out of this and help him fast"

Sammie and Ed put all their strength into trying to lift the sleigh to no avail . Finally they stopped to rest and assess their plight.
The snow had stopped but it was still freezing cold. Ed put his arm around Sammie and pulled her close.
Her teeth were chattering with cold and shock. Ed was afraid for her. Why had he been so stupid as to leave his phone at home.He had wanted no interruptions but he could have just turned it off.

"Do you have your cell phone Sammie?"
"Yes, but it's
