a result of having weak lacrimal glands to a fault. We want to see lots of action, perhaps some violence, coarse language and the odd scantily clad female doesn't hurt the cause either. Males also want to not be made to look like a cross between lumbering oaf and galoot.

One sure fire way to get males to watch chick flicks is to have the lead actor be someone that the audience can relate to. He needs to be on the masculine side of the scale, although he can be sensitive and caring. A great example of an actor who fits this bill is John Cusack. He has made several engaging characters come to life admirably on the screen, including his turns in Say Anything and Serendipity. I found myself rooting for his characters all along throughout the movies. A movie like An Officer and a Gentleman is also well worth the rent. There is enough screen time devoted to Louis Gossett Jr. and Richard Gere to make the film work well for both sexes. There are some good battles waged between Gere and Gossett Jr. to appease the males while Debra Winger prepares to start the waterworks. Robert Redford is another leading man that can play in a chick flick without losing an ounce of cool.

The simple fact is that any movie worth its weight has to be cleverly written and acted well. Leading actors with a closet full of awards cannot pull off the impossible if the script is weak or if they phone in their performances. In summation, chick flicks can actually be entertaining in their own right. Some final examples of excellent chick flicks are; An Officer and a Gentleman, Pretty Woman, and of course, the unparalleled classic movie for people of all ages and genders; The Princess Bride, which offers forth a compelling love story that transcends all. The movie boasts action, comedy, Mandy Patinkin in a scene stealing performance and it also boasts a soundtrack worthy of any CD case. My tear ducts are welling up just thinking about that movie.
