Short stories: Religion

Religion, Christianity, and "The Secret"

A few members of the congregation came to me over the past week, asking me to comment on a film and a book called, "The Secret." If you haven't heard of this book that's sweeping the global community, you've been working too hard or taking too many naps.

Does "The Secret" really hold the answers to the secret of life as it promises? Celebrities are pushing "The Secret" on talk shows and in motivational seminars. Since I know some of you are big fans of talk shows, I agree. We need to talk about it.

Wouldn't it be great to have everything you want, including miracles, just by focusing your mind? Medical science would be outdated, if we could bring health and wealth to our front door. These are the selling points of the film and book titled, "The Secret".

Where did this esoteric knowledge originate? Apparently, it comes from ancient texts and if you didn't know it, all the great thinkers, philosophers and even religious organizations have used this secret in their teaching, according to the promotions of this film.

One person who read the book describes it this way: It's like placing an order from a catalog. You tune into the universe and place your order. No credit cards needed.

Today lets explore The Secret's Law of Attraction and my understanding of how it tracks with biblical teaching. Some of you will disagree with my perspective, and if that's the case, I wish you well with the answers from the universe.

The Law of Attraction is the basic tenet for the belief structure on which The Secret is built. The law of attraction states this:

1. You get what you think about, whether wanted or unwanted. The Law of Attraction is neutral.
2. All forms of matter and energy are attracted to that which is of a like vibration.
3. You are a living magnet.
4. You get what you put your energy and focus on, whether wanted or unwanted.
5. Energy attracts like energy
6. Everything draws to itself that which is like itself.

The secret to getting all you want from life is to dial up the universe and visualize what you want. There's no need for education, performance or effort. It's all taken care of when you know the "secret." The best part is there's no personal accountability.

Do you want to go out and buy the book or watch the film yet? Now, let's switch gears and see what Christianity has to say.

Jesus says, "In the world you have tribulation."

Expect trouble and tribulation, it's a package deal on earth. It comes from a man-centered world whose focus
