Short stories: Outcasts

"You do realize we're all outcasts here," Scum said accusingly.

"Excuse me?" Jake said looking around the lunch table.

"You're Jake Maverick, student body president, editor of the school paper, master chest player, president of the photography club, mathathletes, debating club, drama and computer clubs," Scrum recited with a furrowed brow.

"Have you memorized his resume?" Dominique asked giggling.

He glared at her. "No need to. Everybody knows it. He's the most popular guy in school, which begs the question, why are you here with us?"

"He's my friend, Richard, just like you are," Alana spoke up blushing scarlet.

"Richard? Is that you're real name?" Dominique asked approvingly. She smiled brightly. "I like it. Much better than Scum."

He stared at her aghast. No one ever liked anything about him until Alana and now Dominique? What was going on? He tentatively smiled. He wasn't certain he was doing it right. It had been a while.

"So, why do you all think you're outcasts?" Jake asked sitting down next to Alana and smiling at her. She blushed again.

"Isn't it obvious?" Dominique stated before sipping from her drink.

"Apparently not," Sandy interjected, trying to suppress a giggle.

Jake looked at her curiously and she too blushed. He grinned and pointed to her. "Don't I know you from somewhere?"

"Uh...I don't think so. I'm nobody," Sandy said breathlessly.

"You are not!" Alana said sternly, "This is Sandy Harrington. Her dad's a lawyer so maybe...."

"That's where I know you!" Jake shouted, "Your dad brought you to my dad's office once. Think I was ten. You had two long braids and I thought you were so cute...uh... you were so shy you made me look like a showoff," he finished sheepishly. Her cheeks turned bright pink but she couldn't help smiling.

Scum made a derisive noise. "And how's that different from now?" he said scornfully, "the cheerleaders are over there, the jocks are next to them, all the popular kids hover around them like planets circling the solar system and you should be there with them."

"Richard, be nice, please," Alana said quietly, "Jake was very shy when he was young, just like me and Sandy. He's just done a great job getting over it."

"No way," he retorted disbelievingly.

"Way," Jake replied smirking, "I've always felt like an outcast."

"That still doesn't explain why you're here. You no longer are an outcast." Scum stated triumphantly.

"But I still do feel like one at times," Jake replied steadily.

"You don't belong here. We're outcasts because we're nothing like
