It is not the violence in video games that directly result in real life violence. Video games are an amazing evolution of back yard cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians that we reenacted from watching old movies. We got hurt in the back yard! We inflicted pain in the schoolyard, but I think it was all part of growing up. Video games do not hurt. The parents in the neighborhood were not overly cautious and protective, like they are today. Nobody sued the Jones next door, because his or her kid came home with a bloody nose. If anything, it taught us that it is not worth beating up or getting beat up.
Maybe, real life violence directly comes from the influential realities we see on the nightly news. Maybe, it comes from idols in boxing matches at an NBA or NHL game. Perhaps, it is Youtube? Cops? President Bush? Alcoholics? What about seeing our parents fight? They never had video games when they were children. I think it is first hand observation or involvement in witnessing violence through adults that directly leads to real life violence.
We are another western nation playing the blame game. Let your kids trick or treat! Instead of working late hours at the office, enjoy it with them.
