Prepare for yachting peril: Procedure to follow when a passenger goes overboard

Yachting means quick reactions and some comprehensive knowledge & skills. My first experience when coming close to a collision with an approaching sailing vessel, learning why the occupants of the other vessel were yelling starboard! Starboard! Over and over again, and making a quick move to get out of way. The reason was when the "wind is to your starboard you have the right away". They were just letting me know they had the wind to their starboard. I found some simple steps to help with your "MOB"-(man over board) planning.

(1) Yell "man overboard", point towards the person in water and keep them in site keeping the victim in sight Throw a Type IV PFD, buoy or fender towards the person in the water to help mark their position.
(2) Maneuvering, circling around to pick up on the windward side of the overboard during rough sea and quick-stop method by turning windward remaining near the victim is highly desirable for calm seas. Approach the person in the water from downwind and into the waves
(3) Lifting aboard use the Sailing Foundation-(SF) "Lifesling" System if the overboard is injured.
(4) Sonar, radio frequency, and GPS technologies are available. One caveat these devices do not automatically contact search and rescue authorities.
(5) A Safety flare gun, a yacht radio also helps.

Organizations such yachting, yacht charter organizations, yachting clubs offer Testing and Training and events on general yacht safety; Naval Academy Sailing Squadron (NASS), US Coast Guard.
