We all have a song that we hate, but just can't turn away from. The DJ says it's coming up, and we reach to change the station, but it's too late. The song comes wafting over the speaker's like Shaq's body odor and it just settles; and once it settles in your mind and in your ears, it's there to stay. You're not changing the station, no matter how much you want to, just because that song has you enthralled. You writhe in pain, but for some unbeknownst reason, you stick it out.
This is how I view the 2007 New England Patriots.
The scenario I just mentioned only applies to some football fans, because there are some fans like me who just flat out enjoy this domination that we're seeing. I can't turn away. I find myself glued to the TV every single time I'm able to watch a Pats game. It's despicable, and completely one sided, but there's no other way I can (legally) watch one party dismember their opponent in this perfected, almost mechanical manner.
There are other fans however, who are disgusted by this. The Pats have already had their championships, but instead of getting worse they get better. Not only is it not fair to the other teams, but it's comical that they're able to be this good in the world of a hard-capped NFL even after losing some of their star talent. But even the people who can't stand the destruction, the fans who feel cheated that they never got to see THIS Randy Moss, the fans of the Jets, Bills, and Dolphins who will (at this rate) never get a chance at a Division Title can't turn their heads from the Patriots. They can only watch.
Last weekend, I was set on a Patriot's win, and nothing else would do. I had a conversation with Woz that went something like this:
Me: Man, I think I'm turning into a Pats fan.
Woz: Well, maybe you just hate Dallas.
Me: No, I've always hated Dallas, but this, this is different.
It IS different this year. It's probably different because my generation has always missed out on seeing this kind of domination before. We're relegated to film of the Habs and Oilers, hearsay about the Cowboys, and I've heard that the Bills actually made it to a few Super Bowls before, but I'd really have to see it to believe it.
We've witnessed Peyton Manning lead astounding, breath-taking offenses, but he's always been strangled by his defense. Tampa Bay and Baltimore are prime examples of high caliber defensive units who have struggled because of inept offenses who couldn't stake them to leads. The Patriot's have always been able to surround
