Teaching your children how to deal with prejudice

The best way to help children deal with prejudice is to teach them that the situation must be handle maturely. You must lead by example. Let them see you handle situations in a mature and calm way. This is not always easy. Things such as rude comments, obscene gestures and name calling have a way of bringing out the worst in everyone.

In my case, I have taught my children to step away from the situation. Once they do that, if they feel further action is necessary, they are to go tell an adult exactly what happened. The next step I teach is for them to pray for themselves, the other person, and the entire situation.

This is not always an easy example to live up to. I think that this method will help my kids to grow up to be strong individuals. I want them to know that we are all God's children, even though some of us do not act that way. I teach them that some people cannot accept people who are different but, sometimes, even little children have to stand up and be more mature than grown ups.

In today's world, there are so many differences between each and every one of us that it hard to say who is "normal" and who is not. Because of this, even parents who grew up with certain prejudices should want their kids to have a more diverse network. The prejudices that may held true in past generations simply have no place in future generations!
