Although I don't hold the belief that children should be taught about the difference between heterosexuality and homosexuality at a young age, I still deem it appropriate that parents are the ones who convey this somewhat sensitive and complicated subject to the child. This is a delicate subject to many people, races and members of different cultures and subcultures. Granted, the public school system has made leaps and bounds within the Sexual Education curriculum since its onset many years ago. Yet somehow, I still don't feel that a thorough grasping and teaching of homosexuality is within their reach. In every aspect of our western culture, children are taught both consciously and subliminally that the proper family atmosphere consists of two parents(one male, one female) and one or several children. To touch on a subject that so horrifyingly goes against every aspect of what we are taught as young children, is only fit for ones parents or closest guardian.
Lets think about this for a moment. When "Barbie" is displayed, who is her companion? We all know this answer. When we watch "The Cosby's", what type of family structure is presented? What about the show "Family Matters"? This display of a "traditional" family configuration is available to all of us every which way we turn. To take a subject that is so deeply embedded in our value system from the time we are born and expect children to fully comprehend the complete opposite within the period of a class is ridiculous. This is a matter that I believe should be handled by the providers of each individual children; not by an institution where the idea's behind the subject will be thrust upon the child and therefore an expectation of comprehension too.
