When I first thought of this topic my immediate response was a resounding, "NO!" However, I then thought of the variety of programs on TV, the lyrics to many of today's songs, and the subjects addressed in our films and I could understand why many would say, "Yes!"
The media does present a population of young people concerned with self-centered, selfish activities. It appears that the parents to these children stress the need to "get ahead at all costs" and to not concern themselves with the needs of those less fortunate. Whenever I watch programs dealing with the dating games of today's youth, I laugh at the lack of sensitivity and the obvious stress on the superficial...which is entertainment to some.
This is where I have to stop and look at where I live and the community which surrounds me and nourishes me and my family. We have so many examples of caring and compassionate young people that I am happy to present them in this article.
Our community still has active Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops. I attended the Eagle Scout ceremony for a young man I have known for over ten years, and he was surrounded by many well meaning young men.
After attending a local State Fair, I was so surprised to find many groups of young people in 4 H groups. These young people were seriously concerned with the livestock they were presenting.
Many of our high school students work at our local kitchen providing meals for many citizens who have fallen on hard times. These young people work many hours in their local church groups helping with food distribution to families in need of assistance.
These same young people are quite concerned with our global ecological problems and are working to keep a "green" focus in their lives. They want a healthy future for their children.
In many newspapers and magazines you can find articles focusing on the return to spirituality on the part of today's young citizens. They are filled with questions and know that the answers are not easy to find, and might not match the source of peace found by their parents. They are searching for the truth which will provide peace for their souls.
Are these young people lacking compassion? No, they are on the honorable path for their preparation to become helpful adult citizens.
