There are lots of myths and old wives tails about deterring these little blood suckers.Eating garlic, eucalyptus oil,growing horehound at the back and front door and rubbing pennyroyal on your skin are just a few.One of the best I ever heard was from an uncle as a child who drank more than his fair share of beer every summer. As a child we spent our summers by the river camping as a family. Uncles, Aunts and cousins all making merry over the Aussie Christmas holidays. We must have kept the insect repellent people in business. We all feel victim to these awful creatures, except for my uncle. He still to this day claims it was the beer. Interestingly enough, he had to give up the grog recently because of failing health. He now falls victim to the small flying vampires, the same as the rest of us.I'm not sure why they are attracted to us, but it seems beer was the reason they weren't attracted to him. Not very scientific, but what a great excuse to crack a tinny by the river on a warm summer night.
