Should they? I'm not a doctor, but the effects of paved street on the cranium of a derailed motorcyclist is bound to have major consequences for the brain. So should motorcyclist wear helmets? Of course they should, if only for their own protection and Grey matter. Should being the operative word in the statement. We aren't telling motorcyclist they must (unless of course you live in a state like Alabama) in this statement, just that they should.
Imagine driving your car around 60mph down the freeway. Take a cantaloupe with you and make sure you have a tight string tied around it. Just after you set the cruise control at 61 1/2 mph, let the cantaloupe skid across the freeway for a little bit. Check out the fruit salad that was your cantaloupe. Now imagine your brains being the pineapple in that fruit salad.
It only makes sense that cyclist should wear helmets but should NOT be forced to wear them. Pennsylvania is one of those door is swinging both ways states that makes it mandatory to buckle up in our cars but voluntary for a bike helmet? What gives? Since when do we listen to the government tell us what we can and can not do with the safety and security of our own lives? Why are we held to compliance to a law that is totally subject to the views of one person? It's a victimless crime not to buckle your seat belt. You are the only one to suffer.
We apply the same logic to our 2 wheeled friends as well. You have no one to blame but yourself and your lack of proper head gear when that 97 year old survivor of the titanic decides to pull out in front of you in her 1988 Pontiac Grand Prix, while you're cruising at 50mph. Don't be surprised when the EMT's are picking your brains up with an ice-cream scooper and trying to figure out if it is your liver or your pancreas they looking at across the trunk of grandma's car. Quite possibly, the last audible voice you might ever hear is someone watching your carnage on the sidewalk say, "...he should have been wearing his helmet!".
