There are 3 stimuli that could help mosquitoes zone in on you. So you should be aware of these when you are going in a place where there may be a lot of mosquitoes...here they are:
1)Visual stimuli - this is important for in-flight orientation & over long ranges
a. Movement of the host - this suggests the target is alive
b. Clothing of the host
- if you're wearing something that contrasts with the background, then you're easier to spot!
- color wavelengths are also a factor, mosquitoes are especially attracted to blue
2)Olfactory stimuli - this is more important as the mosquito nears his host
a. Carbon dioxide from the breath & skin really attracts them!
b. Lactic acid present in human skin & breath
*a & b are especially evident when you're tired or sweating
c. floral fragrances may attract mosquitoes since they also suck from flowers as source of nutrients, so try not to wear perfume outside
3)Thermal stimuli - this is for short distances
a. warm skin temperature, that is, when you are tired, your temperature is higher, so you're more likely to be more attractive to mosquitoes
b. Moisture - sweaty? uh-oh!
So there they are. At least now you know why sometimes mosquitoes just love biting & feasting on your blood! (and perhaps you can try to avoid these stimuli to avoid being feasted upon)!
