Movie remakes: Comparing the original Halloween with the 2007 Halloween

Comparing John Carpenter's Halloween, and Rob Zombie's Halloween is fairly easy. John Carpenter's Halloween was a pretty basic story of three teenage girls being stalked by an evil killer, or bogyman. Carpenter's Halloween was a very subtle movie in the way the camera followed the killer, and was placed in a way to show The Shape off in the background at certain points. Carpenter's Halloween wasn't very violent at all, and relied heavily on the imaginations of its audience for it's effect, and use of sound effects, and that chilling score.

Now Rob Zombie's Halloween gave more back story to little Michael Myers, and what he went through on his way to becoming the bogyman. Where Carpenter wanted to make Myers into a mythic character instead of explaining why he is, and just have fun with his bogyman he created. My hat was off to Zombie for trying something a bit different, and even though he tried I really didn't think he explained him too much, he just showed more of what little Michael went through at Smith's Grove, and his relationship with Dr. Loomis, which I really liked, and thought was a good thing.

Zombie also injected his remake with his own style of directing, which is more down, and dirty, instead of Carpenter's more classic style. Zombie also ratcheted up the violence factor, which is a trademark of his, where as we all no there is hardly any blood in the original. Zombie also changed the ending around, but at the end of the day I must say that Zombie did a good job at changing enough things up to make it his own, but never straying to far away from what Carpenter set-up almost 30 years ago.

Even though I liked Zombie's take on the subject matter, it will always be Carpenter's original that will be on the top of my list of best horror movies. Sure Zombie created a pretty good remake, but it's not Carpenter's Halloween.
