Comic books: Where have all the heroes gone?

Superdude's career goes back a long time. His superhuman strength made it so that since the early seventies, he has kept the city of Sugarville free of crime, fighting such notorious criminals as Bad Dan and Mean Green Dean. He helped the local police in many cases, like the notorious murder of Mayor Carroll, or the mysterious murder of model Sarah Stunn. He's had a prolific career, as many of the prizes and medals on a shelf in his office can prove.

But six years ago, he began suffering what even the superheroes can't save themselves from: arthritis. His city has honored him all his life, but he hasn't been working as much these past few years, and it seems his very own people have either forgotten him or are forgetting him.

Today, we meet him in his Groove-Cave, where we are struck down by his faded costumes, the worn down pictures, and the painfully surpassed Auto-Cool. He comes up to us, an older man than what we would have imagined. He looks like a melancholic man. He has gray hair and a beard. Signs of aging are all over him, in his appearance, in his smell, in his gestures.

And so we begin our interview.

MATT MICUCCI: Superdude, you protected the city of Sugarville for over 30 years. How has crime developed over time?
SUPERDUDE: Oh, crime has increased terribly. Back when I started, there were bad people, but people today are just too insane. Because nowadays, anyone can be a criminal. Everyone. Even the ones who would never have wanted to be. Back when I started, you could tell when a criminal was plotting something. Nowadays, you never can tell.

MM: How do you explain this?
SD: I'm not sure. I guess it could be because everyone is so much angrier. The richer are getting richer, the poorer are getting poorer. This society frightens me. It idolizes people that have no education and go around inciting violence. It's a society built on money and the power of money. It's a society built on the material, rather than the spiritual.

MM: As I said before, you have protected the city of Sugarville for so long. But nowadays, there aren't many people like you. This leads people to stop believing in your existence. Well, I ask you, do you think superheroes exist?
SD: I don't know anymore. There was a time when one of us would each take a city, some even a state, and others could even take a country. But how can one man now even think about controlling crime, no matter what superpower he has? I can understand why people don't believe in me anymore.
