Orchid is an epiphyte and perennial flowering plant and needs much care compared to other household plants.Soil is not a necessary requirement to grow Orchids.There are certain things that you should know about Orchids:
1.Buy Orchid only from a reputed nursery or gardner.
2.Choose a good orchid.Take extreme care in selecting one .Choose one with good green leaves which are intact.A good root system and flowering are some of the criteria in choosing.
3.Filterd sunlight or indirect sunlight through window in the morning and noon time is a must.Avoid keeping orchids near the window on extremely cold nights.Also fertilising at frequent intervals.A water-soluble fertilizer should be applied as part of normal watering once a month.
4.Failure in flowering is due to inadequate light and fertiliser.Scales on back side of leaf are a sign of spoilage and should be discarded.
5.Keep the pot of plant in atray filled with pebbles and water.Pot should be on the pebbles.This can ensure adequate humidity surrounding the plant.
