I have a feeling that the majority of people that are against a raise in minimum wage make far more than minimum wage themselves. If they actually had to live on minimum wage I am sure they would feel differently. Trying to live single, much less support a family on minimum wage is extremely difficult if not impossible.
If we do not make sure that people in our country make a livable wage, then we are not doing our job as a country. The United States is a wealthy and great country. But we are only as great as we treat our people. What kind of country are we if we do not give people a chance to support themselves with their wages from a hard days work.
I have heard the argument that minimum wage hurts companies, especially small companies. You know what I have to say to that? That is bull! Most of these businesses are making plenty of money to pay their employees a higher wage. It is greed that causes them to balk and complain about paying a decent wage. Besides, running a business has expenses. If you can't afford to pay your employees decently then you should be cutting expenses elsewhere.
When people can't afford to live, it hurts economy. People that can't support themselves often have to rely on financial assistance. Isn't that absurd? A person works their butt off and they still can't get by and have to get financial assistance. In addition, when people can't afford the basic necessities of life, they surely can't afford to spend money on frivolous things. Those very frivolous things that help make a strong economy.
Bottom line: It is easy to say that minimum wage is high enough, when you don't have to live on it. As a country and as a people, we have to think about every person in this country and make sure that they are treated fairly. In the question of what is fair on minimum wage; The answer is an increase.
